This November, Trading Boundaries will be hosting an exhibition of Harry Potter book illustrator Cliff Wright’s work.
Work on display will include original preparation sketches for ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’ plus bronze and bronze resin sculptures including a sleeping Hippogriff - a mythical creature from Medieval Bestiaries and the world of Harry Potter.
“The two illustrations that I painted for the Harry Potter books, ‘Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets’ and ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’ still attract a lot of interest. Less well known are the preparation and process that went into creating the images. Commissioned artwork for a book cover will entail a period of preparing rough sketches to decide on a final design. In the case of Harry Potter, a passage from the book was suggested and I began to draw ideas working closely with the publisher. So as to retain as much vitality as possible in the final watercolour painting I only produce small-scale quick pencil/pen sketches as roughs. Time is spent on character and composition but not yet on execution, so my roughs are very simple. Nevertheless, following the success of the books these drawings have now become highly collectable.” Cliff Wright
There will be a chance to view and purchase original watercolours from a range of children’s books, greeting cards and advertising work, spanning a 30 year career. The highest quality Fine Art Guild Limited Edition Reproductions will also be available of a number of selected images.
Cliff will also be running a special drawing workshop during the exhibition. Details to be announced soon.
